The Troubled Teenage Generation - Ryan's Reflection
Despite the fact that I agree with the portrayal of the adolescent by the literature that we have read, I, for one, am not very happy with the way that teens are being seen in today's society. Teens, in general, have a deserved negative connotation within today's society. Whenever someone mentions "teenager" the usual associated words are immature, rebellious, and anything else along those lines. Honestly, I am disappointed in myself and the generation for allowing this to happen. Books, films, and pretty much all other media outlets in society share this poor view of teenagers. When reading the literature, I often thought to myself, "Am I really immature like the literature states?" and the answer to this question is usually, yes. While not all teenagers act out on their immature thoughts, I firmly believe that all teenagers at least have some type of immature thoughts running through their head. Reading about the teenagers in the literature we went over this year has given me a reality check, and told me that I need to make an effort to better myself, so that the teenage generation will be looked at more positively in the future. Of course teens do a lot of beneficial things as well. College applications require a lot of community service, and more often than not, especially at Chaminade, teenagers are preforming a lot of service and even making their own service projects that truly help many groups of people. Teenagers today, including myself, should try to maintain a more positive outlook on ourselves by accentuating the positive and eliminating the negative.
