Individualism in Siddhartha
In Herman Hesse’s novel Siddhartha, individualism is expressed when Siddhartha thinks, “I will no longer study Yoga-Veda, Atharva-Veda, or asceticism, or any other teachings. I will learn from myself, be my own pupil; I will learn from myself the secret of Siddhartha” (Hesse 39). By making the conscious decision to throw away the teachings of others, Siddhartha is focused on being an individual, and learning from himself and nobody else. Siddhartha is refusing to fall in line with the rest of society and learn from popular teachings such as Gotama's and is instead forging his own path. Hesse is saying that because Siddhartha is in this period of maturing from childhood to adulthood, it is in his nature to attempt to do things by himself. Despite the fact that Siddhartha succeeded by following his own path, he needed adult help (Vasuveda) in order to accomplish this, showing that teens still do require adult intervention when accomplishing goals.
